Don Street opening

Opening of new Locale in Don Street, St Helier

The Channel Islands Co-operative Society opened its new Locale store this morning on the site of the former Homemaker in Don Street. It has been transformed into a 4,000 square foot store, complete with 8 tills, 6 of which are self scanning, sitting alongside the existing sub-post office and their travel agency Travelmaker.

The Society's Chief Operating Officer Mark Cox said he was very happy with the modern looking store. "Our members have been telling us for some time that they would appreciate more retail space in St Helier so we are really pleased we have been able to provide it. I am delighted with how this new Locale looks and I am sure it will prove to be very successful with our customers."

The store was opened by Mrs Corfield from Quennevais, aged 89, who has had her share number for over 65 years. Mrs Corfield said "It's a really nice treat for me. I used to shop at Charing Cross in town on a Saturday but now I use St Peters since it has been built." She was presented with a bottle of champagne, £100 worth of vouchers and flowers.

The store has created between 17-20 new jobs for colleagues under manager Claire Sinden who was previously manager at the St Brelades Locale and has worked for the Society for 9 years.
