New membership leads to donations to local charities

A membership drive by The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has raised nearly £2,500 for local charities. As an incentive to become a member, the Society agreed to not only donate the £1 membership charge but to match it pound for pound. This raised £2,450 which has been donated to two pan-island charities and the Hospices in each island.

Mark Cox, Chief Operating Officer, said "We are a local company continually looking for ways to support the local community. The new members decided themselves which charity they wanted to support and I am really pleased that these local charities have benefitted as a result."

The charities and amounts donated are:

  • Channel Islands Air Search: £700 (pan island)
  • Teenage Cancer Trust: £850 (pan island)
  • Les Bourgs Hospice in Guernsey: £400
  • Jersey Hospice: £500

Jo Lund from Teenage Cancer Trust said "The charity provides specialist units and support dedicated to teenagers and young adults diagnosed with cancer. It exists to improve their quality of life and give them the very best chance of a positive outcome. We are very grateful to the Co-operative for their support and hard work in raising funds for this worthwhile cause. Many thanks."

Already this year The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has given more than £16,500 from its Helping Hands community support programme to 43 good causes across the islands.  It is also currently considering all applications to its EcoFund which donates funds, generated from the sale of carrier bags, to projects that are helping to protect and regenerate the local environment.
