Recipe Gems

Co-operative searches for the best recipes in the islands

The Co-operative search for best recipes in the Channel Islands

The Channel Islands Co-operative Society is looking for recipes from the local community to celebrate the best of home cooking traditions and talent in the islands.

The Bailiwicks are home to a fantastic variety of fresh produce and recipes to match, from the traditional favourites passed down the generations to the famous dishes from the nationalities that have made the islands their home.

The Co-operative's Recipe Gems is an opportunity for islanders to share their favourites dishes, copied from the well-worn pages of old family recipe books, national dishes with a local twist or original dishes from innovative home cooks.

The Chief Executive of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, Colin Macleod, said the idea came from the Society's reputation as the local business that is founded on the ethos of co-operative principles and community involvement in the islands.

"Through our support of 67 local suppliers we appreciate what fantastic, fresh seasonal produce is available for shoppers. We also know from the shopping habits of our 110,000 members that there are some great dishes being cooked every day in homes across the Bailiwicks. There are also some tremendous influences from around the globe that people have brought to our islands. What better way to showcase this quality produce, talent and experience than by encouraging islanders to share their cookery gems for everyone to enjoy." he said.

The winners will win £1,000 in vouchers that can be spent on a Gastro break in the UK or even wider afield in the traditional home of delicious cuisine, France or Italy.

Michelin Star chef from Bohemia Shaun Rankin will judge the entries in September, with the winners and best selection from Jersey and Guernsey entries being published later this year in a special Channel Islands Co-operative cookbook. Having starred in the local television series, Island Feast, and written the cookbook, Seasoned Islands, Mr Rankin is a champion of local produce and an experienced judge.

Mr Rankin said "I'm really excited. There is so much culinary talent in the Channel Islands, whether it is a recipe that has been in the family for generations or something you have successfully tried out at a dinner party, the Co-operative would love to hear about it and share it with the community. In my own recipe book I included dishes that had been handed down from my grandmother and they are very special to me and have stood the test of time."

The rules are simple: there is no limit to the number of recipes a single entrant can submit and entry forms are available in all Co-operative Grand Marché, Locale and En Route stores. Entry forms can also be downloaded from the Co-operative's website:

Entries can also be returned by hand to any Grand Marché customer service desk or posted to Recipe Gems, Customer Relations, The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, St Peter Retail Office, St Peter, JE3 7AG, Jersey, via the website or on our new Facebook page : Channel Islands Co-operative /local.
