Job Role
We are looking for a Financial Accounting Manager to join the Finance team.
Responsible for various aspects of the Society’s financial accounting including but not limited to cash flow management, detailed balance sheet reporting, balance sheet reconciliations, year-end statutory reporting, external audit process and compiling of the Society’s tax returns.
MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- To develop and lead a team of Accountants, Assistant Accountants and Credit Controllers (including professionally qualified Accountant).
- To be a key contributor in testing and introducing new Finance processes and systems.
- To control the balance sheet, through ensuring that all balance sheet reconciliations are produced, reviewed and signed off every period with an appropriate level of quality and disclosure.
- To manage the preparation of budgets and forecasts of the balance sheet by period.
- To prepare a periodic management accounts and variance analysis of the balance sheet and capital expenditure included in the Board / ELT Performance Packs.
- To prepare the Society’s and its subsidiaries year-end financial statements, ensuring a full and complete audit trail between them and the management accounts, ensuring that any year-end financial accounting adjustments are subsequently correctly entered in the ledger and all opening balances are reconciled.
- To ensure that finance processes and transactions are in line with applicable accounting standards and are updated where appropriate
- To manage the internal and external audit process, liaising with the audit teams, providing support and explanations for queries.
- To ensure that a cash forecast is prepared on a weekly basis which incorporates the most up to date figures available at that time
- To oversee the Society’s quarterly GST returns ensuring that the GST payable is correctly stated.
- To compile all the financial information required for the Society tax computations and annual returns.
- To continually review existing processes to ensure that improvements are made wherever possible and that all procedure manuals are updated accordingly.
- To be first approver for payments as well as supplier set up
- To perform any other duties appropriate to the role

Leadership
Embed the culture and values of the Society within supplies and logistics and encourage all management and staff to attain the highest possible standards and work within the spirit of the agreed Aims and Values of the Society and the Management Charter; create an operational climate that is conducive to employee development, engagement and loyalty.
People Management
Lead, direct, consult with, develop and motivate each direct subordinate in order that they may optimise their contribution to the business in the discharge of their accountabilities for the areas under their direct control; determine and agree performance benchmarks and objectives, review performance against these to reinforce achievements, address shortfalls and identify development needs, on a regular basis.
Membership/Community Relations
Act generally at all times to protect and develop the image of the Society; develop and support community activities, charitable projects, environmental initiatives and local suppliers accordingly. To implement, administer and develop the Society’s policy on charity involvement, sponsorship and environmental initiatives.
Knowledge and Experience:
- ACA, ACCA or equivalent with 3Y+ PQE
- Knowledge of FRS102 is highly desirable
- Experience of financial accounting in retail business is desirable but not essential
- Broad understanding of the Coop locally and the broader co-operative movement
- Strong level of business and financial acumen
- Ability to develop a risk management perspective with regards to areas of your responsibility
- Ability to analysis the internal and external environment for data and trends and action the information
- Consults, collaborates and communicates effectively
- Demonstrable experience of the ability to ensure that transactional aspects of the role are well executed and controlled in a fast-moving, changing working environment
